Welcome Back

Welcome to the first grade! My name is Mr. Jesus, and I am thrilled to be your teacher this year! It’s going to be a fun year full of lots of learning and new adventure. I was raised on the south side of Chicago and after graduating from high school I enlisted in the marine corps. Upon leaving the Marine Corps. I attended the University of Illinois at Chicago and received my degree in English Literature with a minor in Art history. I have been part of the KEY Academy family for the past seven years and have been teaching first grade for the past five years.

This year your students will be busy learning through hands-on activities, discovery lessons, and performance-based tasks and projects that are all based on the Common Core Standards. Some of the activities that they will participate in will include writer’s workshop, science experiments, literature circles, math centers, reader’s theater, and many more activities!

I am excited to be your child’s teacher and I look forward to working with all of you throughout the year. I have an open-door policy, hence feel free to contact me at any time with questions, comments, and/or concerns. My email is [email protected]. I would also greatly appreciate it if your return the attached form with the appropriate phone number and email that you can readily be reached at. Thank so much for  your trust and confidence. Lastly, welcome back!

Mr. Jesus

Welcome Letter 2021

Dear parents,
Welcome back to Key Academy! This year, as you know, classes will resume online. We understand that this may be an inconvenience to most, and we are willing to work with you to make the best of this unfortunate situation. In this letter, we will outline the expectations and requirements for students as they proceed into their digital learning environment.
If you have picked up this letter in person, you should have received a bag containing the following items:
Class schedule
Welcome letter
Online login information
Language arts textbooks and workbooks
Social studies textbooks and workbooks
White board and marker
If you have not picked up this letter in person, you will receive the majority of information online, however you do need to pick up the textbooks, work books, and supplies in person at the school. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT NO MATERIAL BE MISPLACED OR LOST! Students will also receive a laptop from the school to assist them in their online learning.
The expectations outlined here will also be reflected in the student handbook. When a student enters the zoom classroom, the expectation is that they are coming prepared. Preparedness means they have their white board and marker, any work that they had done previously, and any special materials that the teacher has already requested. They should be sitting up straight in a comfortable place where they can be focused. They should be wearing headphones to reduce the amount of background noise. PLEASE NO FOOD DURING CLASS. STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE EATEN PRIOR TO CLASS. However, water is acceptable.During class, they are expected to follow the classroom rules, listen to directions, and actively participate. Failure to comply with these expectations may result in a student losing points for attendance and participation. Also be aware that any behavior that is constituted as inappropriate will result in the student being placed in the waiting room and/or removed from the class for the day. They will be expected to complete the work that was missed.
Finally, we would like to thank you for being flexible, understanding, and for being an active member in your child’s education. We must work as a team in order for the students to succeed during these hard times. The way this can be accomplished is through open communication. The most important thing to remember is our students still need structure even though they are not in class in person. With your support, we can make the most of this year.
Mr. Keith and I  will be happy to provide our contact information, but please respect our time when attempting to communicate with us. The best time to talk will be before school or immediately following dismissal. The majority of information will be provided via email so please make sure the school has an email that is active.

Another good class. Thank you for logging on and participating. Today we worked in our Readers Notebook and reviewed base words ending in -er and -est. As well as changing the y at the end of a word into an I in order to ad the -er or -est. We also took a moment and read our anchor text of the week which is titled "What Can You Do?" Also, we continued to talk about telling sentences and asking sentences and the appropriate end mark that goes in each sentence.
Today we began chapter 12 in math and this is the last chapter in the lesson. This chapter will cover 2 dimensional shapes such as squares, triangles, circles, rectangles, rhombus. We also talked bout the sides and the vertices (corners) of the shapes. If you'd like you can show them the following video that we watched in class today once more https://youtu.be/24Uv8Cl5hvI. The homework is as follows:

Monday April 27th

Good morning parents,
A quick recap of the work that we completed this morning. Today we began lesson 27 in language arts and students were introduced to their new high frequency words and spelling words. The story of the week is titled "What Can You Do?" Please practice the following words with your student throughout the week. Their High-Frequency words are always, different, enough, happy, high, near, once, and stories. Their spelling words are hard, harder, hardest, fast, faster, fastest, slow, slower, slowest, sooner. Remind students that each words has a base word and then we can add the different ending either -er or -est. Also, on some words remind them that in order to add the -er or -est they need to remove the Y and replace it with an I. For example, happy- happier, happiest. We also discussed the authors purpose. Students were also introduced to different kinds of sentences such as a telling sentence and an asking sentence. A telling sentence tells us something and a asking sentence asks us something.
For math we reviewed for our chapter test which I will post here shortly. Thus, homework for today is finishing there lesson 26 test if they have not done so and completing the math test. Parents have a great rest of your day and thank you for the support and understanding.
Best,
Jesus

TUESDAY April 21st

Good morning parents,
Just a quick recap for todays class. I started this morning by talking to the students about the importance of completing their exams on K6Thinkcentral. Please if you have not completed lesson 25 test I have reopened it until Friday April 24th for your convenience. This morning we started by reviewing the story "The Dot" and we also spoke about figurative language and compare and contrast. Remind your students that "compare" is when two things have something in common (the same) and "contrast" is the difference (how they are the different). As for figurative language remind them that these are words that can have multiple meanings. For example, "Vashti sat glued to her seat after class." We also discussed the meaning of an exclamation mark, remind them that when they see an exclamation mark the reader must read with expression and strong feelings.
Our math lesson consisted of lesson 11.2 and we continued to discuss three dimensional shapes. Today we also discussed combining three dimensional shapes to make a new one. I will list the homework below. Please keep up the good work and once again thank you parents.
