January Field Trip

We are going on a field trip to the San Jose Tech Museum on Wednesday January 16th. We are going with 4th grade. We will be going by bus and students are asked to be at school by 7:50 that day so we can board the bus and arrive at our destination on time. Details are on the field trip form students brought home yesterday. Field Trip permission slips are due Monday, January 14th so I can make field trip groups and give a final count to the museum. Parents wanting to chaperone should indicate this on the field trip permission slip. I will be doing a lottery drawing for chaperones by the end of this week as I can only bring 3 parent chaperones. Thank you for your understanding! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Chapter 3 Science Test

Students will have their Chapter 3 Science Test tomorrow, December 18th. They should be bringing their Science textbook home to finish classwork and to study.

Chapter Tests

We are finishing up chapters in Math, Science, and Social Studies in the next two weeks. Tomorrow, December 11th the students will take their Chapter 5 Math Test. Chapter 5 was all about Dividing Decimals.

Thursday, December 13 the students will take their Chapter 4 Social Studies Test.

Tuesday December 18th the students will take their Chapter 3 Science Test.

IXL

This is just a reminder that a great tool for students to use for extra practice is IXL. They can go online at home and practice the skills we are learning in class. When they log on and go to Language Arts or Math, they can look for the gold stars next to certain topics which are my suggestions to them based on what we are learning in class. Also, if your student knows that they struggle in a different subject area, they can also spend time on IXL doing that topic as well. I give extra credit to students who practice on IXL at home.

December book orders

Book orders went home today, they are due Friday. You can also order online with the class code. I have given the class code before but if you need it you can send me an email I’m happy to give it to you.

Week of November 13th

Hello parents and families,

We have a very busy and exciting short week of school this week. The biggest event we have coming up is the Science Fair on Thursday, November 15th from 5-7 in the Cafeteria. Students are also presenting their Science Projects in class this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Students have already signed up for a day to present, so they should come to school prepared with their projects. We can find room in the classroom to store the projects after the students have presented. If your child is not participating in the Science Fair, they can take heir project home after they present to the class.

Tuesday the students will take their Science Test for Chapter 2 and Wednesday we will take the Social Studies Test for Chapter 3. I told the students last week and they were given study materials. I reminded them before we left on Friday, so I know that some students brought things home over the weekend to study.

After this week we will be off for one week for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about anything this week.

Thank you,

Ms. Jessica

State Report

Students have been working on researching and creating a state report. State reports consist of a cover, 7 topic pages, and a bibliography. The students will be given the last pieces that they need to finish today and their state report is due November 26th after the week long break. Students will be presenting to the class, so they should work on their presentations at home. Oral presentation guidelines are in the packet I sent home with the students at the start of this report.

Science Fair Worktime

Students will have time in class tomorrow, November 1st, to work on their Science Projects. Students should bring materials that they need to class. I will be available during that class time for students to get advice and guidance on their projects.

Chapter 3 Math Test

We will be having our Chapter 3 Math Test on Thursday, November 1st. Chapter 3 was all about adding and subtracting decimals. Students will bring a Review test home for homework tomorrow to help them study. If your student missed school or is struggling with any lesson, please have them watch the videos on the Think Central website for extra review and practice.

Thank you!

Science Fair

KEY Academy is having its first Science Fair on November 15th from 5-7pm. 5th grade was asked to do group projects. I have let students choose their groups, or if they really prefer, they can do it by themselves. Students should have come home with some Science Fair Project guidelines that include what the project should look like as well as some websites to go to get ideas. All groups do not have to participate in the school wide Science Fair, but every student will complete a project and be ready to present it to the class the week of November 12th. I will give students some time in class to work on their projects; I will let them know ahead of time so that they can be prepared with their materials.

State Report

We are going to begin working on a State Report today in class. This is going to be a research report on one of the 50 states. Students will be randomly selecting their state. The students are getting the start of the report today, and will be given time at school to do research. If they use their time wisely, they should be able to most of their research done in the time they are given, if not some might need to be done outside of class time. Research notes will be due next Tuesday so that we can begin the writing process in class. On the report directions, it says students must do 14 pages. Instead of that, I have put stars next to the 5 that they have to do and am asking that they choose 2 other topics to research for a total of 7 pages. If you have any questions about the state report after you look at it with your student, please let me know I’m happy to help.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Sign ups for Parent/Teacher Conferences are on the inside on my classroom door. Parent/Teacher Conferences are Wednesday October 24th and Thursday October 25th. Conferences start at 1:00 and each conference is 15 minutes long and will go until 4:00 each day. Please come sign up for a time, or you can send me an email with your preferred time and I can sign you up. You can also have your student sign you up for a time if you let them know what time works for you.

I hope to meet with you all and talk about your child's progress next week! If you cannot meet on those days or at those times, please send me an email or come talk to met at school and we can make other arrangements.

Thank you!

Scholastic Books Orders

If your student would like to order books from Scholastic outside of the book order time frame that I given them, you can go on the Scholastic website and order from there. Our class code is NDFZN. If it's outside of the book order time frame, just be sure to let me know so that I can go put the order through.

Thanks!
