My name is Jessica Prunty and I am one of the 5th grade teacher at KEY Academy. This will be my 9th year teaching 5th grade at KEY and I am so excited to work with this fantastic group of students and the wonderful staff this year! I graduated from Cal State East Bay with my BA in Human Development in 2013 and also received my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from the same school in 2014. In my spare time, I love to read, spend time with my friends and family, and play with my dog.

Winter Gift Exchange

Tomorrow (Thursday, December 21st) we will be having our gift exchange. Students who chose to particpate randomly drew a name last Friday, and that is the student they are bringing a gift for. If your student is participating in the gift exchange, please make sure that they bring the gift to school tomorrow, or somebody will be left out. If they do not bring a gift they will not get their gift.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Ms. Jessica

Opinion Writing

We are working this week on opinion writing. The students have been learning for the past few weeks about the American Revolution, and they are starting an opinion essay with the topic "Should the colonists separated from England?" Some are writing essays about it being a good idea for the colonies to separate from England, and some are writing the opposite opinion. They will have a rough draft completed by Thursday, and they will write the final draft over the Winter Break.

Chapter 4 Math Test

Tomorrow (Wednesday December 7th) we are taking our Chapter 4 Math Test. A great study resource for them is www.ixl.com. They have their usernames and passwords, they should practice math sections I.1-I.9 to prepare for tomorrow's test. If they have forgotten their username and password, you can email me at [email protected] and I will send that to you.

Multiplication Facts

We are progressing very quickly in math, and our class sure does enjoy it! I just wanted to take a moment to emphasize the importance of the students memorizing their multiplication tables. If your student doesn't have their multiplication tables 1-12 memorized, please have them practice at home. Math will become increasingly more challenging if they do not know their multiplication facts. If you need extra practice for your student, please email me or come talk to me at school and I'd be happy to find something for you!

Thanksgiving Break

There will be no school next week November 21-25 because of the Thanksgiving holiday. The students have a math review assignment and a book report to complete over the week.

Enjoy your break!

Parent Teacher Conferences!

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:30-4:00. Students with last names starting with A-L will have conferences Wednesday. Students with last names starting with M-Z will have conferences Thursday. Conferences will be drop-in, I will not have a sign up sheet. If you can not make it on your day or within the time window, please send me an email and we can schedule a different day or time.

Science Test

Students will have their Unit A Chapter 3 Science Test tomorrow, November 9th.

Chapter 3 Math Test

Students will have their Chapter 3 Math Test on Tuesday, November 8th. Chapter 3 was all about Decimal Addition and Subtraction. Monday in class we will take a practice test, and they will bring a practice test home for homework Monday night as well.

American Indian Village Project

Attached is the American Indian Village Project for Social Studies. This project will be done by students at home. Any information that they need to complete this project can be found in their Social Studies Textbook. I invite the students to be as creative as possible! This project is due Monday, November 14th.

Fictional Narratives

Fictional Narrative final drafts are due Thursday, October 27th. Students completed drafts of their narratives in class, had a peer edit it, and also had a conference with me about their writing. Final drafts should be written in neat handwriting and be no longer than twi pages front and back.

Math Chapter 3

Today we started Chapter 3 in Math. Chapter 3 is all about adding and subtracting decimals. The next several chapters in math will cover decimals, and decimal place value is an extremely important concept for the students to understand.

This is a great video that can help explain decimal place value to the students:

Social Studies Test

Students will have Chapter 2 Social Studies Test tomorrow. They should bring their study guide and textbook home to study; they also got the opportunity to study today in class.

IXL Practice

Students can go online on IXL at home and practice skills we are learning in class.
In Math, students can work on sections D.3-D.14 to practice division skills that relate to our math chapter.

In Language Arts, students can work on sections F.1-2, P.1-5, VV.1-4, NN.1-2, and OO.1-2.

Chapter 2 Math Test!

We are nearly finished with Chapter 2 in Math! We will be taking our Chapter 2 Math Test on Thursday, October 13th. Chapter 2 was all about long division, so if those concepts are still confusing, students should be reviewing and practicing at home! Students who do not have their multiplication facts memorized should be practicing those at home as well, because division is very difficult without multiplication.

I will post again a great video for review, students can watch this if they are still confused about long division:

Students will be encouraged to bring their math books home to study on Wednesday, and will also have a study guide for homework.
