My name is Jessica Prunty and I am one of the 5th grade teacher at KEY Academy. This will be my 9th year teaching 5th grade at KEY and I am so excited to work with this fantastic group of students and the wonderful staff this year! I graduated from Cal State East Bay with my BA in Human Development in 2013 and also received my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from the same school in 2014. In my spare time, I love to read, spend time with my friends and family, and play with my dog.

Week of January 24th

This week in 5th grade we are starting Math Chapter 6, which is all about Adding and Subtracting Fractions. Today and tomorrow students will be using fraction strips in class. For their homework, if students do not stay for homework club, I have copied below a link to fraction strips online that they can use to help them. The link is also in Google Classroom:

Friday, we took the Chapter 5 Math Test. If your student was absent Friday, I gave them their test today to work on. If they don't finish during class time, they can work on it at home and bring it back to me tomorrow.

We are still working on our Interim tests (practice state tests), and I hope to have those finished this week.

Quarter 2 ends on Friday, so please keep encouraging your students to do their best and make sure to get all their assignments turned in. Report cards will go home probably in the second week of February, they will be mailed to your home. There are no parent/teacher conferences for this quarter.

Week of January 10th

This week we are starting practice state tests, these are called Interim tests. We will be doing the ELA interim this week, and Math next week. We're also working on Main Idea and Details, Greek and Latin Roots, and commas and semicolons in Language Arts this week. In Math we are working on Chapter 5, which is decimal division. Students are taking their Chapter 5 mid-chapter quiz in class today, so unless they have unfinished work, they will have no Math homework today.

Some important reminders from the school:

January 28th is the deadline to submit intent to re-enroll forms for next year if you would like your child to stay at KEY Academy. It's important to get those submitted so that the school will hold your child's spot for next school year. You can find these forms on our school website www.keyacademycharter.org under the enrollment tab on the home page. If you need help with this, please let me know or let the office know and we'd be happy to assist.

Our school is hosting a parent university on February 4th at 8:15 in the cafeteria. A Hayward police officer is coming to talk to parents about technology safety. I highly recommend attending if you can!

Our school will be having class movie days on Friday, January 28th from 1:00-3:15 for grades 4th-8th. Students are not required to attend; it is just a fun after school activity. Flyers should be going home soon.

Lastly, please make sure students stay home from school if they are feeling unwell. If your child is going to be out for 5 mor more days, please let me and the office know as soon as you can so we can collect work for them.

Thank you, and please let me know if you have any questions.

5th Grade Update

I wanted to give a quick update on the remainder of this week. Our class has been having some behavioral challenges these past few weeks since we came back from the one-week break, so I am still trying to determine if we will be having a fun activity on Friday. Hopefully if the rest of the week goes well, we can do a fun activity and watch a movie on Friday. I will tell the students by the end of tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding Friday.

The items in the lost and found will be donated at the end of this week, so if your child is missing something, make sure you come and visit the lost and found before the end of this week.

We have been working on Let's Go Learn testing and most students have finished their tests. We will be finishing that up by the end of this week. Students should be working on that in class only.

Tomorrow we are taking the Chapter 4 Math test. Students will be bringing home a review test today as their homework. We will also review in class this afternoon.

Friday is the last day of school before the two-week Winter Break. Classes will resume for students on Tuesday, January 4th.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

If I don't see you before, I hope you have a wonderful break with your families! Thank you for all of your support and for everything that you do for your student!

5th Grade Update

Good afternoon families,

This week we are working on Chapter 4 in Math. Chapter 4 is about Multiplying Decimals. We will take the Chapter 4 Math test before the Winter break. In Language Arts we are reading stories in this unit about the American Revolution. This week we are working on Figurative Language. Today the students are taking a Science test.

Also, this week we are starting our second round of Let's Go Learn testing. This testing is important to our school as a way of monitoring student progress. Please remind students to do the best they can on these tests, so we have an accurate representation of their skills.

A reminder, students have homework every day. We do daily spelling, reading, and math that is checked in class daily. It is important that students complete and turn their homework in for practice, and for the grade in class. If your student is having an issue with homework, please let me know so I can work something out with you.

Here are some IXL extra practice skills that go with our lessons this week if you would like your student to have some extra practice at home:

Math:

I.8, R.5

Language Arts:

F.5, G.2, F.2, F.3, OO.4, and T.1

Chapter 3 Math Test

We will be taking the Chapter 3 Math test on Wednesday, December 1st. Chapter 3 was all about adding and subtracting decimals. We will review in class on Tuesday in preparation for the test. Students will bring home a review test for homework on Tuesday.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like any additional IXL practice.

Thanks!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Dear Families,

Next week, November 9th and 10th will be minimum days at school due to parent/teacher conferences. To sign up for parent/teacher conferences, please visit the link https://calendly.com/msjessica5/parent-teacher-conferences to schedule a meeting with me. I am offering both in person and Zoom conferences, please select which one you would prefer on the Calendly sign up page. If you choose to meet on Zoom, it will create a special Zoom link for our meeting. If you choose in person, it will be in my classroom at the time you have selected. In person conferences will get the report card at the conferences, Zoom conferences will have the student report card mailed home, but I will show it during the conference time.

I hope to get the chance to talk to everybody next week!

Ms. Jessica

This week

Students will be having their Chapter 2 Math test tomorrow in class. Chapter 2 was all about Division. Students will bring home a practice test to study, we are also going over the practice test together in class.

We are having a costume parade at school on Friday afternoon. The costume parade is from 11:45-12:30. Parents are welcome to attend, but we ask that you please not arrive on campus until 11:30. Parents may park in the school's back parking lot for that day only. Parents are asked to remain on the blacktop near the field during the parade. This area will have cones to indicate where you mat stand and watch. We ask that all younger siblings that do not attend KEY Academy that attend the parade with parents stay with their parents. The play structure will be closed during the parade time.

We will be having a party in class on Friday and watching a movie prior to the parade. Students are encouraged to wear costumes on Friday, but we ask that students not bring toys, costume masks be taken off in the classroom, and regular masks must still be worn by students all day.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

5th Grade Update

Here's what is happening in 5th grade in the next few weeks:

We are finishing up Let's Go Learn testing in the classroom. We have been using the chrome books for this. We are going to start our first writing assignment in class this week, the students will be writing a fictional narrative about a haunted house.

We are also finishing up Chapter 1 in Math and will be taking the Chapter 1 Math Test on Monday, October 4th. We will take a review test in class tomorrow and go over it in detail to practice. The students will also bring the review test home for homework tomorrow and will keep it over the weekend to study for their test. Students can bring their Math books home to review if they remember to bring it back to school. It's important for students to memorize the Properties of Addition and of Multiplication, and work on multiplying by 2- and 3-digit numbers. If you need extra practice, please let me know and I will send you the IXL skills that go along with it.

Since Let's Go Learn testing is finished, we will be resuming with Science soon.

Students have been having trouble remembering to do their spelling homework and their reading logs. Since I have been having some difficulty getting this from them weekly, I have started checking reading and spelling daily. Please remind students to read for 30 minutes and get their reading log signed, and to practice all their spelling words every day Monday-Thursday to prepare for Friday spelling tests.

Thank you for all your support, and please let me know if you have any questions.

Picture Day

Picture Day is Wednesday, September 29th. Students are bringing fliers home today.

Let's Go Learn testing

It is my goal next week for our class to begin using Chromebooks. The first thing that we will do on the computers is Let's Go Learn ELA and Math testing. This will give us an understanding of what grade level they are working at in Language Arts and in Math. I have login information that I will be giving the students in class next week. They should memorize it to use IXL and Let's Go Learn for extra practice at home, but when the time comes if they do not have it memorized at home then you can send me an email and I will get the information to you.

Today we talked about the rules with using the computers in the classroom. The students will need headphones or earbuds to take the Let's Go Learn test in class next week- I would like for them to bring a pair in next week that we can leave at school to use when we are using the computers. Please let me know if they are unable to bring in headphones and we can figure something out.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you!

Week 3 Update

Good morning!

This week 5th grade is working on Multiplication Patterns in Math. We will have our first Math quiz on Wednesday in class, so there should be no Math homework on that day. If that changes, I will send another update.

In Language Arts this week we are working on Theme and types of sentences. We will also be continuing with Science Chapter 1 all about Ecosystems.

This is the first week of homework club. Homework club is Monday-Thursday from 3:15-4:15. Students staying for homework club will be in my classroom with me. To help speed up the student pickup process, we would really appreciate if you could make a family sign for your car with the first names and grades of your students so that when you drive up, we can see quickly which students you are looking for.

Tomorrow is Back to School Night. from 5:00-6:15 parents may come to the classroom in person, or from 6:15-7:00 parents may attend Back to School Night virtually on Zoom. If you need my Zoom information, please email me at [email protected].

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I hope to see many of you in person or on Zoom for Back to School Night!

Welcome back to school!

Last week was a wonderful week getting to know your students! This week we will begin Math, Language Arts, and Science. Students will now have homework and a homework folder. Inside will be a monthly planner where students will record their homework as well as their Reading minutes. Students are required to read for a minimum of 30 minutes and get a parent signature to indicate that the student read for at least 30 minutes.

Spelling homework will be completed daily and returned every Friday. In the homework folder there is a Spelling Choice Board- students are allowed to choose any activity from the board to complete each day. Students must choose different spelling activities for each day. Each month students will get a new Spelling Choice Board.

Math homework will come home every day Monday-Thursday and it is to be turned in the day after it was assigned. Students will not have Math homework if we took a test that day in class.

You can subscribe to the website to get notifications about homework and other important announcements.

Next Tuesday is Back to School Night. It is from 5-6:15 in person, or 6:15-7:00 on Zoom. I hope to see as many of you as I can!
