Agenda and Homework for April 19 - 23, 2021

Agenda and Homework

Virtual School (ZOOM) for Room 18

April 19 - 23, 2021

Dear Room 18 Parents,

Below, is a letter from Tiffani, regarding CAASPP Testing, which begins Monday (April 19). Room 18 will be testing on Thursday April 22, and Thursday April 29, (not last week as stated in last week’s agenda.) Please read the letter carefully. Below the letter, you will find t his week’s agenda.

Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):

For the 2021 spring administration of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) for English language arts/literacy (ELA), mathematics, science, students will be able to take their assigned tests remotely or in-person. Our priority is to keep our students and educators safe by following state, county, and local health and safety requirements associated with the current pandemic.

This letter provides information about what students testing remotely need. Students will take the test from the safety of their homes. The test administrator or examiner will connect with each child by computer. To make sure that each student receives the most accurate score, we are providing the following guidelines for student testing:

  • You may assist your child with setting up the technology used to enter the test session.
  • To keep the test fair for all students, we ask that you do not talk about the questions on the test or any materials for the test with anyone before, during, or after the test.
  • No one may record the test or use a camera or another device to take pictures of the test questions or of your child taking the test. This helps to keep the questions confidential.
  • We need to know that the test is being completed by your child without any help. To verify compliance, a web camera and microphone will be used to observe your child while taking the test. The camera is only used to observe your child and the surroundings during the test and will not record the session.
  • Please follow all instructions given by the test administrator or examiner to place the camera where your child and the child’s immediate surroundings can be observed.

If your child is experiencing computer issues the homeroom teacher will give them an alternative date when they need to come to the school for in-person testing. Please ensure that your student is brought to the Hayward Campus by 9:15AM. Students will need to bring their device along with earphones.

In-Person testing will be completed on the day that your student is on campus for in-person learning. Students will need to bring their device along with earphones.

Testing will begin on Monday, April 19th. Please contact your student’s homeroom teacher for specific dates and test that will be given.

If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to Ms. Aishan at [email protected] for more information.

Thank you for making sure your child is ready to test. With your help, we can ensure that your child, as well as all students in California, are provided with the best opportunity to succeed and show what they know.

Agenda and Homework for April 12 - 16, 2021

Agenda and Homework

Virtual School (ZOOM) for Room 18

April 12 –16, 2021

Parents: This week’s agenda has a lot of information in it. I’m sending it early, so you can read it in sections if you like. Please see the school website for the English version of the letter below. It’s in a different format that does not transfer accurately to our agenda.

Queridas familias:

Atentamente,

David Ramírez

Absences and Missing Work

Dear Room 18 Parents,

Please be aware that absences and missing work are beginning to affect the grades of some students.  Please monitor your child during school hours (9:00 AM - 4:00 PM), to make sure they are participating in class.  Their camera and their mic should be on and they should be interacting with the class by speaking, looking at the screen, and working along with us in their various schoolbooks.  Some students are logging in to our ZOOM class, but their camera is off, and they are not responding when called on.  As this is the only way to determine whether a student is "present", these students may be marked absent.  Absences are beginning to affect the grades of some students.

Please Also monitor your child's progress on Google Classroom.  There you will find all your child's assignments and you can see which ones have been completed, and which ones have not been completed.  Missing work is also beginning to affect the grades of some students.

If you have any questions or concerns, please see me in my ZOOM room during my office hours, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 2:00 - 3:00.   My ZOOM ID is 632 667 4688 and the password is key.

Thank you for your support,
Ms. Robin

Agenda and Homework for 11/30 - 12/4, 2020

Agenda and Homework

Virtual School (ZOOM) for Room 18

November 30 - December 4, 2020

Sra. Robin

Agenda and Homework

Virtual School (ZOOM) * Room 18 * 6th Grade

November 30, 2020

Dear Room 18 Parents,

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. In Room 18, students frequently mention gathering with cousins and other family members. What a nice way to spend time.

In Room 18 we are beginning to have an issue of repeated absences and non-participation. Please remind your child that attending and participating in virtual class is just as important as attending and participating in physical class. Too many absences will negatively affect a student’s grade, as will not participating in class.

Participation in our virtual class means being present, prepared with everything needed for class. Participation means students respond when called on, join Breakout Rooms, and log onto class computer sites during class time. For students with slow internet-speed, this is the only way I can tell if they are in attendance. When a student’s camera is off, and that student repeatedly fails to respond when called on, and does not join Breakout Rooms, they are presumed to be absent.

Please provide your child with a quiet place to participate. Loud background sounds in one student’s environment, interferes with everyone’s ZOOM experience. If a student is attending class from someplace other than home, please make sure they bring their class materials with them.

Virtual class comes with some unique challenges. For students, participating from the warmth and comfort of home just doesn’t feel like school. And, parental obligations can interfere with a student’s ability to attend. Hopefully, the shelter-in-place will end soon. In the mean time, this is the best way to keep students learning and keep all of us free of illness.

Please watch your email for our weekly Agenda and Homework Schedule. It will show you what students are studying each week, as well as the time each subject is taught.

Thank you for your support

Ms. Robin

Ancient Civilizations

Due Monday November 23, 2020

For this project, please prepare a presentation that will teach the class about the ancient civilization you picked. Your presentation should have three parts:

            * a 1 - 2 page informative essay discussing the ancient civilization,

            * a visual that illustrates something about your civilization,

            * a presentation in which you read your essay to the class and tell about your visual.

About the Essay

Your essay should answer the questions, who, what, when, where, why, and how. Attached is a worksheet to help you organize your thoughts and information.

Your essay should be typed on Google Classroom, using a 12-point, Times New Roman font (What you’re reading right now.). Line spacing should be 1 – ½. DO NOT DOUBLE-SPACE between lines or paragraphs. Remember to indent each paragraph.

Your essay will be graded on originality and accuracy. You must use your own words. Also be sure to use correct spelling, grammar, and sentence structure. The paragraphs should flow into each other in a logical sequence.

About the Visual

Your visual should be a PowerPoint or Google Slide show, and contain pictures that help you to teach about your civilization. Ex. a chart, maps, images of people, landscapes, etc.

Your visual will be graded on creativity, attractiveness, accuracy, and relevance.

About the Presentation

Be prepared to read your essay and tell about your visual to the class during the week of November 23. Practice ahead of time so that you are able to read fluently and speak loudly, clearly, and confidently.

Your presentation will be graded on how well you speak, make eye contact with your audience, and answer questions.

Ancient Civilizations

This is only a guide. You do not have to stick to it strictly.

MAIN IDEA (Thesis Statement)

This is your introduction. It should tell WHO your essay is about, and include the main thing you want to share about that civilization. It can begin with something like:

My essay is about the __ civilization. The most interesting thing about this civilization is____.

Or, be more creative; start with a question.

Have you ever wondered what is so (pick an adjective) ________ about the _______ dynasty? Be sure to support this statement in the body of your essay.

DETAIL #1

This is a new paragraph and begins the body of your essay. Be sure to indent. Tell WHEN and WHERE your civilization existed. How did it rise to power? Who were some of its rulers? How did they rule? What language did the people speak?

DETAIL #2

This is a new paragraph. Be sure to indent. Here is where you discuss one of the main points about this civilization. What is this civilization known for? What are some characteristics of this civilization?

DETAIL#3

This is a new paragraph. Be sure to indent. Here is where you discuss another point about this civilization. What did it contribute to world history?

DETAIL #4

This is a new paragraph. Be sure to indent. Here is where you discuss another point about this civilization. What remains of it today? Has its borders changed? What do we call it today? Do the people speak their original language? Where can we find more information about this civilization?

CONCLUSION

This is your final paragraph, however, you can decide how many paragraphs your essay will have. Here is where you restate the main idea in your introduction.

Vocabulary Quiz Next Friday

How to Make a Paper Mache Earth

                                             You will need:

½ cup of flour and 1 cup of water

                           several pages of newspaper

                           scissors and a spoon

                           about 24 inches of string

something to color with (markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc)

Step 1: Pour the flour into a small bowl. Slowly stir in water, until you                                                   have a paste the consistency of pancake batter. Set the paste aside.

Step 2: Gently tear, or cut, some of the newspaper into strips about 1 inch wide and 12                         inches long; about the width and length of a ruler. Set the strips aside.

Step 3: Take several whole sheets of newspaper and ball them up into a ball.

Step 4: Immerse one of the newspaper strips into the paste, then, gently lift it out.

Slide the excess paste off with your fingers.

Step 5: Wrap the paste-covered strip around the newspaper ball. After you have wrapped                       several layers of newspaper around the ball, wrap the string around the ball once,                                 making sure the ends are hanging down and are the same length.

Step 6: Continue wrapping paste-covered newspaper strips around the ball until it grows                                    to the size you want. Cover the ball with a final layer of dry newspaper strips.

Step 7: Tie the ends of the string together, and hang your model up to dry.

NOTE: When your model is dry, we’ll color it and add some labels.
