My name is Jessica Prunty and I am one of the 5th grade teacher at KEY Academy. This will be my 9th year teaching 5th grade at KEY and I am so excited to work with this fantastic group of students and the wonderful staff this year! I graduated from Cal State East Bay with my BA in Human Development in 2013 and also received my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from the same school in 2014. In Language Arts this week we are continuing the unit on Westward Expansion. Students will be working on summarizing texts, identifying literary elements in a text, the VV syllable pattern, multiple meaning words, the prefixes mis- mal- and suffixes -ible, -able, and point of view.

We will be working over the next three weeks on the next round of Let's Go Learn testing. I have reminded students that it is important to try their hardest on these tests so we can see how much they have improved from the Fall.

Homework for Thanksgiving Break

Good morning,

For practice over the Thanksgiving break, I would love students to practice the skills with stars next to them on IXL in Language Arts and Math. Students also have the Let's Go Learn Edge program for practice as well. I'd also like students to try and read every day and practice multiplication facts if they don't have them memorized yet.

I hope you have an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday!

Our class will be visiting the Book Fair on Thursday afternoon during class time. You are welcome to take your student before then, but that is the time we have to go during the school day.

Monday is Halloween. We will be having a Halloween Parade from 10:30-11:45. Parents are welcome to attend and stand in the designated standing area. After lunch on Monday, we will come back to the classroom and watch a fun Halloween movie. If your student would like to bring a treat to share, please make sure it is a storebought treat only. We also have food allergies in our class. Please make sure anything you bring to share does not have nuts or soy. We also have students who do not eat pork products including gelatin, so please keep that in mind as well.

If students are going to dress up for Halloween, we ask that they please arrive at school in their Halloween costume. Halloween masks should be removed during class time, and weapons, gore, or blood are not permitted in the Halloween costumes. Costumes should be school appropriate and still follow the dress code rules.

Week of October 3rd

Good morning,

This week in Science we are working on Producers and how they make their food. In Language Arts we're reading a poem this week and learning the different types of poems. We are also working on theme, and figurative language. Today we are taking the Chapter 2 Mid-Chapter quiz in Math. Chapter 2 is about division, and all the different ways we can solve division problems. If students are struggling, homework club is a great resource for them to get extra help. During homework club I have students start with their Math homework and we can work on it together. For homework today, students have review on lessons 2.3 and 2.4.

Please make sure if students do not have their multiplication tables memorized, they are practicing at home. We are doing timed multiplication tests on Fridays; students get 2 minutes to answer 21 basic math fact questions. Students need to get at least 17/21 to move on to the next test. This week will be our 3rd week working on the timed tests. We started with the 2 times tables, and students that passed last week and the week before will be moving on to the 4s this week. Graded times table tests went home in the Friday folders, so make sure your student showed you their times table test from Friday so you will know what number they will be on this week.

Students take their ELA tests on www.hmhco.com, so they have not been bringing those home for you to see. If you would like to see their scores, you can have students show you by logging in. If they don't remember their log in, please let me know and I will send that to you.

Progress reports went home last week. If you have any questions or concerns about your student's grades, please reach out. Quarter 1 ends October 28th and we will have parent/teacher conferences for the first report card.

These past few weeks, 5th grade has been having a difficult time during some times of the day with paying attention. I remind students that even if it isn't their favorite subject, it's important to make sure they pay attention and ask questions when they need help during the lesson. Sometimes students wait until the last minute to ask questions and then I'm not able to help them. If you could help by reinforcing that at home, especially asking questions during the lesson when they need help, that would be very helpful to me.

Important Dates

October 4th- Mobile Library. We will go as a class during class time.
October 10th- No School For Students.
October 11th- PTO Meeting at 9:10AM.

Week of September 26th

Good morning!

We have a busy week in 5th grade this week. In Math we are starting Chapter 2. Chapter 2 is about division. Students should continue to work on practicing their multiplication facts at home. We have started doing multiplication timed tests in class on Fridays. Most students passed their 2 times tables last Friday, but there are still a handful of students who are working on it still. Students need to get an 80% or above (17/21) to move on to the next number. If you didn't see the timed test from last Friday, be sure to ask your student to show you. I also passed back the Chapter 1 Math Test on Friday, it was in the student's Friday Folder.

Tomorrow, September 27th, we are taking the Lesson 2 test for Social Studies. In Lesson 2 We learned about American Indians and their land. We learned where most of them migrated from many years ago, and the differences in the 4 main regions that they migrated to.

In Language Arts this week we are reading two stories, The Secret Garden, and The Miracle of Spring. We are working on different types of nouns and beginning to draft student's fictional narratives.
