My name is Jessica Prunty and I am one of the 5th grade teacher at KEY Academy. This will be my 9th year teaching 5th grade at KEY and I am so excited to work with this fantastic group of students and the wonderful staff this year! I graduated from Cal State East Bay with my BA in Human Development in 2013 and also received my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from the same school in 2014. In my spare time, I love to read, spend time with my friends and family, and play with my dog.

Week of April 17th

Good morning,

This week is a short week, parent/teacher conferences are Wednesday and Thursday, and there's no school Friday or next Monday. Wednesday and Thursday are minimum days, school gets out at 12:45. Please sign up if you have not already.

This week we are working on a class research project on Puerto Rico for Multicultural Day. The student's hard work will be displayed on a hallway bulletin board next week. There is no new spelling or vocabulary this week. In Math, students are working on Chapter 9, which is about graphing data and finding numerical patterns. We are also going to be learning concepts from the end of our Math book in preparation for the Math CAASPP test. I am hopeful that doing some extra Math for the next several weeks will help get the students as prepared as possible before CAASPP testing.

Students are finishing up the lesson in Science Earth Systems Produce Weather and Climate. They will be taking the Science test later this week.

Multicultural Day is coming up on April 28th. Parents are welcome to come and join in the festivities. We will also have a potluck in class where students are welcome to brig dishes from their culture to share. I do ask that any dishes that are brought are labeled with all of their ingredients so students with food allergies or students that don't eat certain things can make an informed decision.

Here are some important dates coming up:

Parent/teacher conferences- April 19-20
School holiday- April 21-24 No School
Multicultural Day- April 28th

Have a great week and please let me know if you have any questions.

If that doesn't work for you, please let me know and I will share it to you in a different way. I will also have copies on my classroom door, and you can sign up in person or let me know a time that works for you, and I will let you know if it's available. Week of 3/27

Good morning,

This week we are busy getting ready for CAASPP testing and wrapping up some units in Language Arts and Math before the Spring Break next week. We are doing our Math review a little different for this chapter so we can make sure to fit the Chapter 8 test in before we go on break. We are going to do the review test together throughout the week to get students prepared for their test. We will take the Chapter 8 Math Test on Thursday, March 30th.

Please remind your students that if they are absent, it is their responsibility to get makeup work from me when they return. I've been having some trouble with students coming to me on the day of a test and telling me they don't understand because they weren't here, but they didn't come get any work from me. If you could help me with that reminder I would really appreciate it.

We are taking the ELA CAASPP multiple choice test on Wednesday at 10:30. Please remind students to take their time, and take the test seriously.

I will be allowing work time Tuesday and Wednesday for students to work on their book report projects in class. Book Reports are due Thursday, March 30th. Please make sure your student is working on their book report at home. Friday, March 31st is the book parade where students will show off their book projects. I will also give an extra credit point on their project if they dress up like a character from their book.

Week of 3/21

Good morning!

This week we are busy with preparing for the CAASPP test as well as our own testing in the classroom. Thursday students will be taking the CAASPP Language Arts Performance Task from 10:30-12:30. I had previously stated we would be testing starting at 8:30 but we have switched it to 10:30 to disrupt the students schedule as little as possible. It's important that students get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on the morning of the test. We will also have a snack time before testing, so it would be a good idea for students to bring a snack to have snack before taking their test. Please let me know if you have any questions about CAASPP testing.

Because we are testing this week and there was no school today, we are doing test review this week and students will not have spelling or vocabulary, spelling and vocabulary will resume next week. This week students will also take their Chapter 7 Math test. Chapter 7 was about multiplying fractions. Students will have a review test for homework tomorrow and will take the test Wednesday.

Tomorrow night, March 21st, is Literacy Night from 5:00-6:30. Join us in our classroom for reading related activities. I will have different things that you can take home to help your child practice reading and vocabulary strategies.

Quarter 3 ends March 31st; any missing or late work should be turned in this week so I can grade it to put in in the gradebook for report cards. Progress reports were sent home last week. If your student hasn't shown you their progress report, please ask them for it. They are to be signed by you and turned back in to me. Parent teacher conferences will take place April 19th and 20th, sign up for that will be after the Spring Break.

Book reports are due Thursday, March 30th. If your student needs help, please have them let me know and I'm happy to help.

Important Dates:

March 28th- PTO Meeting @9:10.
March 30th- Book Reports are due.

April 1-9- Spring Break.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Have a great week!

Book Report Project

I wanted to give a little more information about the student's Book Report PRoject. Projects are due March 30th and will be completed mostly at home. The students have chosen between 5 different options; they can make a "Movie Poster 'on a poster board, they can create a Book Timeline, They can make a 3D model of their main character and come up with 8 interview questions and answers, they can make a shoebox diorama of an important scene, or they can create a map of the setting. All options require some sort of visual element and writing in some form. Students have chosen their book report option and talked it over with me- they should have all the information they need to complete the assignment including the rubric for how it will be graded. Students should take their time on their project and make sure it is neat and complete when they turn it in. Please check in with your student at home to ensure they are completing their project before the deadline.

Week of March 13th

Good morning,

This week we are working in making inferences, using quotations and interjections, prefixes in-, un-, dis-, and mis-, and identifying homophones in Language Arts.

In Math we are still working on multiplying fractions; today we are taking the mid-chapter quiz.

Today students are taking a Social Studies test, and tomorrow we will be starting a new unit in Science about Earth Systems.

Today I am giving a book report assignment to the students. They will come home with several options for how they would like to complete this project. Tomorrow at school they will be picking the book report option that they would like to complete and be given a grading rubric for how their report will be graded. The guidelines for their book report are they are required to read a chapter book, and it cannot be a graphic novel. It can be a book that they are already reading. We are going to the mobile library tomorrow so if your student doesn't have a book to use for this report, they can get one tomorrow. The book report is due Thursday, March 30th.

We are CAASPP testing this month, March 23rd and March 29th. I will try to have snacks for them to eat in the morning, but it is very important than students eat breakfast, get plenty of sleep the night before, and come to school on time. We will take the Math and Science CAASPP tests later on in the year.

Important dates:

Week of February 13th

Good morning,

This Week in Language Arts we are taking it slow because we have a short week this week and next week. Students will have the same spelling and vocabulary words for both this week and next week, and we will take the Language Arts test. Spelling test, and Vocabulary quiz all next week. Students should still complete spelling homework every night. We are working this week and next week on words that end with the sounds /ij/, /iv/, and /is/, conjunctions, stressed and unstressed syllables, and central idea.

In Math, we are continuing to work on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators. This concept can be very tricky for some students. If your student needs extra practice, please let me know and I'm happy to give them IXL to practice. Students are taking the Chapter 6 quiz today, so homework will be a review paper.

This week in Science we are taking the lesson 7 test today. Starting Wednesday, we will go back one lesson to Lesson 6, and Ms. Giselle will be teaching that lesson with support and guidance from me. Ms. Giselle will also be teaching the last 3 Math lessons on Chapter 6. It's very important that students return the permission form that was sent out last week for consent to be recorded so that we will know who can and who cannot be in Ms. Giselle's videos for her classes. Please let me know if you have any questions about that.

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. Students are welcome to bring Valentines for their classmates, but please make sure if students are going to pass out Valentines during class time, they bring one for each student. We have some students in our class with severe nut allergies. Please do not bring anything that contains nuts. We also have students in our class that do not eat any pork products or geletin. Please be aware of that when you send your students with things to share.

We have a lot of birthdays coming up in our class. It is fine if your student wants to bring something to share with the class for that, but please make sure if you are bringing something like pizza or cupcakes, it does not arrive to the school at lunch time. When students have food to share in the cafeteria, it leads to arguments and hurt feeling when there is not enough to share with everybody. If you bring somegthing to share for a birthday, please check in with the school office and then bring it to the classroom. I also always appreciate when you let me know in advance.

Important Dates:
