My name is Jessica Prunty and I am one of the 5th grade teacher at KEY Academy. This will be my 9th year teaching 5th grade at KEY and I am so excited to work with this fantastic group of students and the wonderful staff this year! I graduated from Cal State East Bay with my BA in Human Development in 2013 and also received my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from the same school in 2014. In my spare time, I love to read, spend time with my friends and family, and play with my dog.

Week of 10/23

Good morning!

This week is a different schedule for students. Students will not have Spelling words or Vocabulary words to practice this week. In Language Arts we will be writing a "spooky" narrative about a house. IF they decide not to make their narrative spooky, that's okay too. We will continue doing Math as usual, and are working on adding and subtracting decimals.

This week we are having parent/teacher conferences. If you have already signed up, thank you- you don't need to do anything else. If you still need to sign up, here's the link:

Mrs. Aishan will be passing out ELPAC and CAASPP test scores in the cafeteria, please see her before or after your parent conference to get your child's scores.

Next Tuesday is Halloween. The Halloween parade will be at 10:45- parents are welcome to attend the parade. There is a costume contest, and details about that should have gone home last week. Students should arrive to school already in costume. We will be doing a fun painting activity and watching a Halloween movie during class that day as well. If your child is concerned about getting paint on their costume, please have them bring an old shirt to put on over their costume. The paint is washable. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please let me know!

Book fair will be open starting Friday during Fall Festival and will be open next week as well.

PTO is meeting tomorrow 10/24 at 8:30 in the cafeteria. Everybody is welcome.

Important Dates:
10/24- PTO Meeting
10/31- Halloween Parade 10:45

Please let me know if you have any questions and have a great week!

In Science we just finished the lesson on consumers and will take a quiz later this week. IXL skills for ELA and Math will have a star next to them.

Next week we are having parent/teacher conferences to discuss student's progress in Quarter 1. Please follow the link to sign up for a conference:

Week of 10/10

Good morning!

This week in Language Arts we are working on compound words, summarizing, author's craft, central idea, the root geo, and suffixes -logy and -logist. Any IXL skill with a star this week will help them this week.

In Math, we are starting Chapter 3 which is a chapter on decimals. This week we will be working on the place value of decimals and using pictures and numbers to express decimal numbers. We are also working on putting decimals in order from least to greatest, or greatest to least. I have put a star next to IXL skills that will help them if they are struggling.

This week we are also jumping back into Science, and will be talking about Consumers, and the role they play in an ecosystem.

This is the last week for students to submit missing work or test corrections, the quarter ends October 13th and after that I cannot accept any late, missing, or makeup work.

week of 10/2

Good afternoon,

This week in Language Arts we are working on r-controlled vowels, making and confirming predictions, Greek and Latin Roots, and text structure in an informational text. Students can use any ELA IXL skill with a star to help the review at home.

In Math we are working on finishing up the division chapter: we will take the Chapter 2 test on Thursday. Chapter 2 was all about division.

I've gotten quite a few questions about how students can improve their grades, which I really appreciate! I have made packets of missing Math homework for any student who has anything missing. If your child does not come home with a reteach packet, it means they have turned in all of their Math homework. I have also told students that they can make test corrections on any Math, Science, or Social Studies test or quiz. If they make test corrections it has to be in a different color so that I can see their corrected answers easily. I do not do test corrections on Spelling or Vocabulary tests because we correct them together. Students have until October 12th to give me any missing or makeup work so that I get a chance to put it in the grade book. I will not take any points off for late work, I want them to have as much or a chance to raise their grades as possible.

A huge THANK YOU to all students and families who donated towards our Fall Festival raffle basket. We can't wait to see how all the baskets turn out on Fall Festival.

There is no school for students on Monday. October 9th it is a teacher in-service.

Week of 9/25

Good morning,

This week in Language Arts we are working on plural nouns, suffixes-full, -less, -ness, and -ment, r-controlled vowels, context clues, theme, and author's purpose. We will also be writing poems this week for our benchmark writing assessment. A benchmark writing assessment is when we have the students write at the beginning of the school year and compare their beginning of the year writing to their end of the year writing.

Here's some IXL skills that may be helpful this week:
Poetry: L.2, N.3, GG.1
Suffixes: Y.6, Y.7
Frequently confused words: W.1

In Math we are continuing with division. Students will take the mid-chapter quiz in class today; we will review before they take their quiz. Their homework tonight will be review as well. On IXL there are some skills with a star that will help the students this week.

Tomorrow we will take the Chapter 1 Social Studies test. Chapter 1 was all about geography of the United States.

Tomorrow the students will visit the mobile library at school. They will be allowed to check out a book that will remain in the classroom for them to read. Please encourage your student to choose a book that will hold their interest and they will finish. Students are responsible for mobile library books. They should not be letting other students borrow them and they should not take them home.

Thank you to all the families that reached out after receiving progress reports last week. There is still plenty of time for all students to improve their grades before the report card comes out. It would be helpful for parents to continue reminding students to always try their best and pay attention during class time so they don't fall behind. I always encourage students to ask questions but that would be a great reminder as well. If your student did not show you a progress report last week, please as them for it.

Wednesday is Picture Day; order forms went home last week.

Important Dates:
9/26- PTO Meeting @8:30
9/27- Picture Day
10/12- Parent University
10/13- Quarter 1 ends, last day to submit work for Quarter 1 report card.

Please let me know if you have any questions and have a great week!

Greek and Latin Roots: Y.1, Y.2
Reading Comprehension: M.2
Figurative Language: FF.1

We have transitioned to taking the student's Language Arts assessment on the computer, so students will not have that assessment graded in their Friday Folder this week. Students can log in to their account to see their score. The website is www.hmhco.com. Their username is their student ID number, most students have this memorized because it is their lunch number, but if they don't, please let me know and I can get that to you. Their password is knights.
